The Acadia Bedroom Collection
BG Furniture is proud to introduce the Acadia Collection in its 80th year of producing quality, solid hardwood furniture. This new collection is dedicated to the Acadian people.
The founding of Port Royal in 1605 marked the beginning of permanent French settlement in the region the French called Acadia. By 1750 about 10,000 Acadians had developed a prosperous agricultural economy by dyking and farming the tidal marshes around the Bay of Fundy. The colonial power struggle between France and England was coming to a climax. Between 1755 and 1763, British authorities enforced a deportation order. This traumatic event became known as the Expulsion. Many Acadians later returned to Nova Scotia.
The Acadians are a vibrant and dynamic group of people. Just about everything was handmade. There was an abundance of wood available to build their homes and furniture. Almost all Acadians learned how to work with wood. Those who didn’t would trade their goods for them. Many Acadian’s spent much of their life indoors.
Throughout the 19th century, Acadians created traditional furniture using hand tools and construction techniques which employed basic frame-and-panel joinery techniques brought to French Canada and Acadia from 17th-century France. Use of painted finishes was a technique employed to decorate the furniture.
Their “joie de vivre” and pride in their French heritage was the inspiration behind establishing the Acadia Education Fund to support French second-language education across Canada. BG Furniture proudly supports the role teachers play in bringing French to students in all provinces and territories. The company believes learning about the culture, way of life and traditions of Francophones will help to bring a better understanding of people raised in any French community.
